Notes

Clark notes that this sign really means anything fat or greasy, and is very much like THICK, and there is but little difference between THICK and THIN. Like all signs of very such recent origin, where there is no striking peculiarity different gestures are made. Sometimes the size of the sides of bacon as issued to the Indians is made, and also the sign for EAT; and some tribes make the sign for HOG. All this, of course, depends on what name they have given the substance. The gesture for rooting is common. IN some cases it is "white man's bear;" others, "white man's dog," etc.

Tomkins says to make the sign for EAT to make this sign less confused with THIN. He says the left hand should be pointing outwards, but his picture shows the hand flat. Clark says the hand should be pointing to left and front with the back to left.
